Course Agenda

Just Do It!

  • How to calculate lost time billed at how it can affect the firm in the long run. Also includes methods to practice contemporaneous timekeeping - such as working closely with assistants and paralegals, entering for non-billable time, and creating a timesheet daily.

Be Mindful of What You Record

  • Always proofread your entries. Like any other written product, your timesheets reflect the level of carefulness or carelessness that goes into your work. The importance of specifying task entries (avoiding block billing) to ensure billing is clear for clients.
  • If you’re a new associate - it’s essential to not guess about the time it takes for you to perform a task/project. In this situation, it’s your responsibility to ask your supervisor about how long it regularly takes to complete those tasks/projects. No clients like to be surprised with billing!

Important Things to Know

  • Shadow Billing is more important than you think. Knowing your billing process and how it works is power. Take the time to learn your firm’s process for billing your clients.
  • A breakdown of the billing process, from shadow billing, time entry, the prebill stage (proformas), the billing stage, invoicing the client, and tracking accounts receivable.

It’s How You Pay Your Expenses

  • An overview of the importance of keeping clients informed with contrast communication and complying with the uniform way of billing in your firm. You should bill regularly and on time - this is how you pay the bills and staff.

FAQ

  • How can I get support?

We are here to support you along the way with any questions you may have about accessing the course. For support please email us at [email protected]

  • How long will I have access to this course?

Once the course is purchased, you will have access to it for 30 days.

  • Is this course accredited in other states too or just North Carolina?

At the moment, most of our courses are CLE/CPE accredited in NC only. However, our goal is to offer accredited courses in all 50 states and have already begun the process of expanding our programs into other states. Each course will have the details of its accreditation on its respective webpage.

  • How do I report my CLE/CPE credits?

After you complete one of our CPE or CLE accredited courses, you will receive a certificate with the pertinent course information you will need to submit for your paralegal certificate renewal. If you included your state ID# in your profile, this will be printed on your certificate. If not, you will need to manually write this in prior to submitting for renewal. CLE courses are automatically approved as CPE credits and should be handled in the same manner. For attorneys seeking NC CLE credits from approved courses, we will send your information to the state board for you on a bi-monthly basis. If you receive communication from the NC state board seeking payment for credits from one of our CLE-accredited courses, bring it to our attention at [email protected] and we will promptly resolve the issue for you.
